Most Famous cuisines you must try in India

We all remember those face muscles stretched out with the eyeballs reduced to the size of those of an ant and the continuous pour of the waterfall of a dribble. The last time I had mentioned Indian food to a foreigner that is the literal facial expression I remember receiving. India is truly the land of spices. With our digestive tract getting inflexible with bland food to such an extent that we discovered a new “Indian-Chinese” cuisine. Our country has a diversified culture which makes our food equally diversified with a variety of cuisines available right from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.  Although there are some identical spices and taste preferences all over the country, yet the style of cooking and the manner of eating is so distinctive. Justifying this, ‘idli’ and ‘sarsokasaag’ don’t feel like they are native to the same land. These are some authentic traditional cuisines listed below that shouldn’t be left unmarked in your list of cuisines you must try in India.

1. Sarso Ka Saag aur Makke ki Roti

This finger licking archetypal Punjabi cuisine rightly defines the large-heartedness and cheerfulness of the people of this land. Prepared with the three kinds of saag(sarso, bathua and palak) this dark green cuisine is best with a piece of lemon and some makke ki roti. How could we forget the chief butter that just augments the flavour, which is common to all the Punjabi dishes. Haveli in Jalandhar is the right place in case you want to try this special dish.

2. Rogan Josh

I feel nothing defines Kashmiri cuisine better than the Rogan josh. You could eat the wazwan and not be satisfied enough unless the Rogan josh made a place on your platter.  This lamb dish is mostly preferred with some saffron flavoured naan. Gulati in Delhi is my personal favourite spot for Rogan Josh. I must say, it is the best place to try this cuisine.

3. Daal Bati churma

It will remind me of Rajasthan as soon as I hear the name of this cuisine. What makes their dishes unique is the ease with which they can mix sour and sweet flavour and make the combination so mouthwatering. The platter looks delightful with the spicy dal in one corner, sweet churma and the deep fried baati in the other. This is the most famous cuisine of Rajasthan available in almost all the regions of the state. One must try this delicious cuisine while their visit to Rajasthan.

4. Dhokla

When I hear the vegetarians cribbing about their limited food options then I ask them to do a recheck if it is Indian food they are referring to. Dhokla is one such vegetarian dish that just awakens those taste buds leaving them as refreshed as ever. Originating from the state of Gujarat this dish made of fermented batter will leave you wanting to eat more even when your belly has stocked up enough. So make sure to try this mouthwatering dish while your visit to Gujarat.

5. Vada Pav

How could we miss the street fast food line that every five-year-old Indian cribs to escape the ‘boring’ daal and roti prepared at home? This street food native to the state of Maharashtra becomes a personal favourite of anyone who visits the state. Fried potato patty stuffed in between the pav makes it a very simple preparation. Simplicity in the dish and delicious taste will bind you to try this cuisine all the time during your visit.

6. Idli sambhar

Hailing right from South India, Idli sambhar is a popular breakfast found in the South. Idli or the flavorful cakes are best in taste when had with a ‘chutney’ or the vegetable poach called ‘sambhar’. Tamarind is a chief ingredient that adds flavour to the sambhar. It is a very light and delicious cuisine available in almost all regions of South India. If you are a foodie, then you should definitely try this cuisine to admire the lip-smacking taste of Indian cuisines.

7. Macher Jhol

We could possibly not forget the Bengali’s and their evergreen love for their pet animal “fish”. If you are a seafood lover or a ‘fish’ lover, then Bengal is the perfect state for you. The fiery fish stew is mostly served with rice. The dish is not only traditional to the state of Bengal but also to the state of Orissa. This lip-smacking cuisine is a must try if you are travelling to its native state.

8. Palak ka Kaapa

This delectable cuisine is not heard by many people. It is a traditional cuisine of Kumaon region indigenous to the state of Uttarakhand. This Kumaonicuisine does not require to cook the green vegetable(kappa)for a long period of time. It is best to have it with some rice. The high altitude spinach used in this dish offers a delightful taste, which just makes the kappa tastier!

9. Hyderabadi biryani

This authentic dish from Hyderabad is much-loved cuisine by all the non-vegetarians. It is the special recipe which makes this cuisine taste exclusive. Goat is the favoured meat used in this special cuisine but is also available in chicken variety. This mixture of rice and meat is too scrumptious to resist!

10. Mysore Pak

A sweet dish is a perfect cuisine saved for the last. Originating from Mysore, this dripping saccharine dish is prepared with some chief ingredients like Ghee, Sugar, cardamom and gram flour. After a salver full of dishes with a variety of spices, this syrupy dish is the ideal manner to end your meal. The sugary taste will linger in your mouth much longer than you would have imagined!
